My mother’s heart aches for all of you. Because Marcel was such an important person in the lives of our children Polly and Michael, he was also a part of our lives. What do I think of when I think of Marcel? He was quiet, sweet, free-spirited, respectful, spontaneous, creative, playful and he had a smile that warmed your heart. I think of him barefoot and with his guitar. I remember laughing at the many stories the kids would tell about the things he did - - like shimmying up the light pole barefoot, of course. And why?, because he could! The more appropriate question here would be - - why not? I have been looking through old photographs and have found pictures of Marcel and the kids from the vacation he took with us to South Carolina long ago. In one of them he is playing chess with Michael. In another he is riding horseback with us along the ocean. A favorite is one of him soaring high and free in the air when we went parasailing. The house we rented on the trip had a cathedral ceiling in the livingroom and a second floor railing that overlooked the room. Only years later did we learn that while we adults were out on our bike riding excursions, Marcel entertained himself and the kids by leaping over that balcony railing onto the couch below! But isn’t that just like Marcel? He leapt whole-heartedly into life. The outpouring of grief from so many people whose lives he touched is a tremendous tribute to the person he was. Please accept our sincerest sympathies for your tremendous loss.

I scanned several pictures that I would like to email you, but won’t post as Lindsie would be unhappy if I sent them out for the world to view…..two from their graduation and a more recent photo of Linds………if you would like them and when you find time, please send me an address and I will share them……..

It’s been years since I last saw Marcel…l. The last time was for coffee….when he hopped off his bike to greet me, it was as if the years hadn’t passed.

For the last 10 years….Marcel’s influence has been in my habits and mannerisms…or maybe in just the way I think to myself.
Marcel was a gift that I never asked for…but never forgot. In the first years of knowing him, he saved me from myself numerous times…Always there when I needed someone who wouldn’t push too hard but was always able to guide, while making it seem like it was my idea in the first place.

Marcel will forever be my silent guide…

Marcel was with us for about 6 month in 2001. Jared had brought him to us here on Fidalgo Island in Northwest Washington state while Jared was courting my daughter Emily. Jared and Marcel met at St.John’s and were friends. We always needed some help with our construction business and always had extra room so Marcel stayed in our home. He was so easy. We liked having him around.

It was September 11th and my 48th birthday. I was alone watching the 2nd airliner hit the 2nd tower. I had to tell someone so I woke Marcel. He was suprised because I usually didn’t have to wake him for work. He said “Happy Birthday. Sally” and I said “My birthday is fucked and so is World Peace. Two commercial jets just slammed into the World Trade Towers in New York”. He got up and quietly sat with me as we watch the towers come down and turn to dust. Marcel was who you wanted to be with when the world is falling apart…

I see God in you, Marcel
